DENIM

When Does Selvedge Denim Actually Make Sense?

Selvedge denim makes sense when the construction of the garment actually uses the selvedge edge. If it is chosen only because it is perceived as heavier, stronger or higher quality, conventional denim may achieve the same product objective at a significantly lower cost.

THE PRODUCTION REALITY

Selvedge denim is often treated as a quality category. From a manufacturing point of view, it is better understood as a design and construction choice.

The first question we ask is simple: where will the selvedge actually be used?

If the garment is designed to expose the self-finished edge — along an outseam, coin pocket or another visible construction detail — selvedge can become a meaningful part of the product.

If that edge is never used, the economics become harder to justify.

A typical selvedge denim may be around 85–90 cm wide, while conventional denim can reach approximately 170 cm. That difference has a major effect on marker efficiency and fabric consumption.

At small production quantities, a comparable selvedge fabric can therefore cost roughly two to two-and-a-half times as much as a conventional alternative once fabric price and consumption are considered.

What selvedge does not automatically provide is better quality.

A conventional denim with the right yarn, construction, density and finishing can be stronger, heavier or better suited to the intended garment than a selvedge fabric.

Nor does selvedge require a fundamentally different washing process. The wash is developed according to the characteristics of the fabric and the desired result, just as it would be with conventional denim.

For us, the decision comes back to the product.

If the selvedge is part of the design, use it.

If it isn’t, we would rather put the budget into the fabric characteristics that actually affect the garment.

RN FIELD NOTE

“Selvedge is a design choice, not a quality certificate.”
