How Small Brands Access Fabric Below Mill MOQ
Small brands do not always need to meet a mill’s standard fabric MOQ. Existing bulk production, stock fabrics and occasionally deadstock can provide access to smaller quantities but each route depends heavily on availability and timing.
THE PRODUCTION REALITY
Fabric MOQ is often one of the first obstacles in small-run garment production.
A mill may require a quantity far beyond what a 50 or 100-piece garment order could reasonably consume. That does not necessarily mean the fabric is inaccessible.
There are other routes.
One of the most useful is existing bulk production.
Large mills regularly produce fabrics for established brands, including ongoing or NOOS programs. If a suitable fabric is already scheduled for a substantial production run, it may sometimes be possible to take 100 or 200 metres from that production rather than initiate a separate small order.
The advantage is access to a current mill-quality fabric without meeting the normal production MOQ.
The disadvantage is timing.
That opportunity exists while the bulk production exists. If development takes too long, the production window may close and the same fabric may no longer be available in a small quantity.
Stock fabrics are the second route and often the more stable one.
Some suppliers deliberately maintain fabrics in stock for extended periods. For small-run production, these collections can provide a healthier balance between quality, continuity and manageable quantities.
Then there is deadstock.
Deadstock can occasionally provide exactly the right fabric in exactly the right quantity, but availability is unpredictable. We treat it as an opportunity rather than a sourcing strategy.
For small brands, fabric sourcing is therefore not simply about finding a mill willing to produce less.
It is about understanding what already exists in the supply chain and finding the most reliable route into it.
